Oudtshoorn, 12 February 2025: On Tuesday, Pope Francis added the September 5 feast day of St. Teresa of Calcutta to the Church’s liturgical calendar as an optional memorial.
The Vatican issued a decree on 11 February, recognizing the global influence of St. Teresa’s spirituality. The decree stated that her name “continues to shine out as a source of hope for many men and women who seek consolation amid tribulations of body and spirit.”
The General Roman Calendar, which is the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar, marks the dates of holy days and feast days of saints celebrated annually.
St. Teresa of Calcutta’s memorial on 5 September will now be included in the Church’s calendars and liturgical texts, with specific prayers and readings designated for use at Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.
